China wishes President long life

Herald Reporter (21/02/08)

PRESIDENT Mugabe yesterday received a birthday present from the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Yuan Nansheng, at Zimbabwe House.

The present — a visual art piece of an embroidered Chinese national flower called the peony — was in honour of the President’s 84th birthday, which is today.

The peony, which symbolises beauty and decency, is a popular flower in China particularly in Hunan Province where Mr Yuan comes from.

Mr Yuan said he had settled for the pictorial present because the First Lady, Cde Grace Mugabe, had shown great admiration for Chinese art works during the First Couple’s visit to the China Embroidery Museum.

The piece also carries an inscription in Chinese wishing the President a happy and long life.

In presenting the visual art piece, Mr Yuan, who was accompanied by his wife, He Lina, said the gift was a reflection of the great respect the Chinese government and its people have for President Mugabe and the people of Zimbabwe.

"This is a Chinese government gift for your birthday and it took artists four months to design. I am glad to be with you, for tomorrow is a special day for you," said Mr Yuan.

"I am very happy to have a chance to express our deep respect and our best wishes for you. Your Excellency, you are a great revolutionary in the world, the best friend of the Chinese people," he added.

The President, who turns 84 today, celebrates his birthday with the people of Matabeleland South Province at the weekend in Beitbridge.

A musical gala has also been planned for the occasion, which also marks the 22nd anniversary of the 21st February Movement.
